NORWEGIAN UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY
NTNU website

Department of Physics

Physics is the foundation of natural sciences. Our way of living is dominated by technological development based on discoveries in physics.

Based on research over a wide spectrum of natural science and technology, the institute offers education which provides a solid basis for future carriers. Physics research is carried out in experimental as well as theoretical fields, often across conventional boundaries between disciplines. Central research areas are materials science, nanoscience, surface physics, modern optics, astrophysics, solar energy, biophysics, and medical technology.

Research staff at the institute make a special effort to increase the awareness and understanding of the importance and impact of physics in our society.

The Department of Physics currently employs about 150 persons. During one year about 2000 NTNU-students follow our courses.

What is PHYSICS?

Physics is natural science built on experiments, measurements and mathematical analysis with the purpose of finding quantitative physical laws for everything from microcosmos to macrocosmos.

The laws of nature can be used to predict the behaviour of the world and all kinds of machinery, and the basis for many of the everyday technological things that we now take for granted, were originally created by the discoveries in physics. The basic laws in physics are universal, but physics in our time is such a vast field that many subfields are almost regarded as separate sciences.
