Emnebeskrivelse
BIO-8104: Applied molecular genetics Work Load 20 credits (ECTS) | Contents The aim with this course is to give a thorough introduction to molecular genetic methods used in modern biological research. All lectures will be closely connected to the practical problems to be solved in the laboratory. Written laboratory reports will be subjects for plenary discussions as well as one obligatory literature summary. The course will give a basis for advanced studies in different areas of microbiology and will therefore contain problems concerning medicine, ecology and food-microbiology. Four practical problems are planned within the following topics: Taxonomy, genetic diversity, identification and characterisation, and horizontal gene transfer. The following methods will be used: rep-PCR-fingerprinting, 16S-RFLP, in situ hybridisation, DGGE (denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis), Pulsed field gel electrophoresis (PFGE), conjugation and transformation. The teaching will also address phylogeny and microarray technology. | Compulsory prerequisites BIO-1001 Cell and molecular biology, BIO-2300 Biochemistry, BIO-2601 General microbiology | Recommended previous qualifications BIO-2302 Molecular cellbiology | Form of teaching Lectures 10 hours, field and laboratory exercises 60 hours, seminars and project work 40 hours. | Coursework requirements
