Arctic natural resource manangement and agriculture
Contents and objectives
The programme is a 5-year master’s programme with the option to finish at the end of three years and receive a bachelor’s degree. The students will be given basic training in mathematics, chemistry and biology on the bachelor programme. In addition students will undertake multidisciplinary specialist courses in Arctic natural resource management and agriculture with the objective of giving the students knowledge of the use and management of natural resources in the north. Special emphasis will be laid on the interdependence of scientific, sociological, economic and legal issues. This part of the programme will provide insight into topical challenges in relation to sustainable food production and business development. The specialist subjects are intended to raise the student’s level of awareness and understanding of human beings’ responsibilities as managers as well as the relationship between and interdependence of humanity and nature. These topics will, taking their starting point in local approaches to different challenges, give training in appreciating the complexity involved in harvesting from, and in the use and protection of nature as well as in the use of strategies for resolving conflicts. The themes will be illuminated and discussed in a circumpolar perspective.
The obligatory special subjects will represent 60 course-credits (c.c.) plus 10 c.c. elective subjects (NAB-2001) and consist of the following:
- NAB- 2001 Humans in artic ecosystems (20 c.c.)
- NAB- 2002 Plant production, ruminant and reindeer husbandry in the northern regions (20 c.c.)
- NAB- 2003 Freshwater and wildlife management in the northern regions (20 c.c.)
- NAB- 2004 Project on arctic natural resource management and agriculture (10 c.c.)
There are three programmes available at master’s level. The student must make her/his choice of courses whilst taking their bachelor’s degree, depending upon which master’s programme the student wishes to follow. All three lines of study must have a multidisciplinary perspective. The titles of these programmes are as follows:
- Plant production and the basis of production
- Freshwater resources
- The physiology/ecology of ruminants
