  • May 22, 2003 Jorge Hankamer and Line Mikkelsen (UC Santa Cruz) When movement must be blocked Abstract: Embick and Noyer (2001) develop an analysis of definiteness marking in Danish and Swedish employing the central assumptions of Distributed Morphology together with the syntactic operation of head movement of N to D. We argue that this analysis as presented cannot account for the full range of facts, and after examining several theoretical and empirical problems we conclude that the assumption of N-to-D movement is incompatible with the central assumptions of Distributed Morphology.

  • March 27, 2003 Malgorzata Kul and Magdalena Bator, our visiting students from Poznan, will present their work. Malgorzata Kul: "Which accent, please?" The presentation has been prepared for the 34th Poznan Linguistic Meeting, organised by the School of English, Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznan, Poland (http://elex.amu.edu.pl/ifa/plm/index.htm). The conference will take place on 1-3 May 2003 and will focus on hot issues in contemporary linguistics. One of them is accent and teaching native vs. artificially derived pronunciation models in EFL such as Lingua Franca Core as proposed by Jennifer Jenkins. My contribution is to present and discuss the results of the questionnaire conducted among the students of the School of English in Poznan. The aim was to find out what they think and which accent they will teach as prospective EFL teachers. The discussion of the results will be preceded by a brief introduction devoted to the issue of accent. Moreover, some implications for teaching will be also mentioned as well as the phonological features of the LFC (J. Jenkins 2000).
