Part-time work

The rules for international students concerning work permit changed in 2007. In general these were good news for international students in Norway, as they imply less paperwork and the cancellation of a fairly expensive registration fee.

International students now get a permit to work part time (up to 20 hours per week) for the 1 year, together with their student permit/ visa. That is, you get this automatically without having to pay anything or fill in any documents. For those students staying for more than 1 year (2 semesters), the University of Tromso will recommend/ not recommend a renewal of the work permit depending on the student’s progression (but in most cases we approve).

Traditionally, part-time jobs have been quite hard to get for international students. But as the labour market is very strong at the moment, the chances have become better.
