FYS-3004 Advanced plasma physics

Innhold Based on FYS-2009 Introduction to Plasma Physics, this course gives a solid foundation of plasma physics at a level that on successful completion will allow the students to start original research. The course starts with the kinetic foundations of plasma physics leading to the Vlasov equation and its classical applications to stable and unstable wave phenomena including Landau damping/growth and plasma fluctuations with the test-particle principle. Other topics may include magnetohydrodymanics, turbulence and anomalous transport , elements of complex and dusty plasmas and plasma confinement. The theory will be augumented with an introduction to diagnostic techniques, especially those relevant to the plasma devices in the Birkeland plasma laboratory, and the execution of laboratory exercises therein.
