I.Programme description
II.Progression of the programme
Discipline(s)
Qualification awarded: Bachelor of Arts
Language of instruction: depends on the discipline/language/level. Please see relevant course descriptions.
I. Programme description
1. Contents
The programme combines an education in language with an education in economics, and provides basic knowledge of one language (English, Finnish, French, German, Russian, or Spanish) and of economics. The use of the chosen language is included in the economics courses. The programme provides the opportunity for in-depth studies of either language or economics.
2. Objectives, access to further studies and professional prospects
The programme is relevant for students who wish to pursue a career in international affairs with special competence in language and economics. At the same time, the programme provides the opportunity to work in the school system by providing teaching competence in two subject areas.
3. Target group
The programme is aimed at students who want work internationally with an education in language and economics.
4. Programme coordinator
The Faculty of Humanities/the Programme Board
5. Subject fields involved
English, Finnish, French, German, Russian, Spanish (The Faculty of Humanities), and economics (The Norwegian School of Fishery Science)
6. Admission requirement
University admission certification. For English, French, and German, previous knowledge at the level of upper secondary school or equivalent is required.
7. Student exchange
It is strongly recommended for the students to incorporate a stay abroad into the programme since this will especially strengthen the combination of studies. The stay abroad must support the language chosen for the bachelor's degree: For Finnish and Russian, by studies in the respective countries, for German at German language universities in Germany, Austria or Switzerland, for French in France, Switzerland or the French speaking parts Africa or Canada, for English in the UK, in Ireland, North America, Oceania, or the English speaking parts of Africa or Asia.
8. Programme structure diagramme
The programme consists of the following components:
- 30 ECTS first-semester courses
- 60 ECTS group in language (one-year course combination)
- 60 ECTS group in economics (one-year course combination)
- 30 ECTS intermediate courses in either language or economics
Joint course HIF-2510 Language and economics
HIF-2510 Language and economics (10 ECTS) is compulsory, regardless of which discipline is chosen. The course builds upon knowledge from both subject areas, and should therefore be taken relatively late in the programme, either as part of a stay abroad or as part of the last semester.
The first-semester course (30 ECTS)
The students can choose between the first-semester courses at:
i) The Faculty of Humanities: FIL-0700 Examen philosophicum (10 ECTS), EXF-0720 Examen facultatum for the humanities (20 ECTS)
or FIL-0700 Examen philosophicum (10 ECTS), EXF-0723 Examen facultatum for the humanities (10 ECTS) and SOK-0001 Basic economics and economic policy (10 ECTS)
or FIL-0700 Examen philosophicum (10 ECTS), EXF-0723 Examen facultatum for the humanities (10 ECTS), and SOK-0001 Basic economics and economic policy (10 ECTS)
ii) The Norwegian School of Fishery Science (economics): FIL-0700 Examen philosophicum (10 ECTS), EXF-0710 Examen facultatum for the social sciences (10 ECTS), and SOK-0001 Basic economics and economic policy (10 ECTS), which is recommended as an optional course.
60-ECTS group (one-year course combination) and intermediate courses in language (30 ECTS)
The one-year course group in language is organised by the relevant language department and will normally be the same as the one-year course combination for the Bachelor programme in language and literature.
For languages, 90 ECTS of pure language studies are required, and the joint course HIF-2510 must therefore be taken as an optional course in the one-year course group in economics.
1000-level studies in German will only be offered every other spring starting spring 2007, spring 2009 and so on. 2000-level studies in German will also only be offered every other spring starting spring 2008, spring 2010 and so on.
60-ECTS group (one-year course combination) and intermediate courses (30 ECTS) in economics
The compulsory courses SOK-1001 Markets, Prices, and Economic Behaviour (20 ECTS) and SOK-1010 National accounts and Business Cycles (10 ECTS) are the basis of the one-year course combination. They provide necessary knowledge for most other courses in economics. They are offered in the spring semesters, and it is therefore strongly recommended that the economics studies be started in the spring semester.
The one-year course combination also includes SOK-2001 Game theory and strategic behaviour (10 ECTS), SOK-2010 Open Economy: Macroeconomics and growth (10 ECTS), as well as an optional course (10 ECTS). The students are to choose three 10 ECTS intermediate courses, where HIF-2510 Language and economics must be included unless it has not been taken as an optional course in the one-year course group.
It is possible to change the choice of discipline in language or economics as long as it is done by the 6th semester.
9. Discipline(s)
10. Access to further studies
Depending on the discipline chosen, the programme qualifies for admission to the Master programmes in linguistics, in literature, and in economics. Students who wish to pursue a Master's degree in economics should note that the course SOK-2020 The Economist's ''toolbox" must be taken as an intermediate course.
11. Teaching and evaluation methods, assessment, examination
The choice of work and examination forms will be based on the nature and content of each individual course. Performance in this programme is assessed with the grades A-F or with pass/fail.
Resit examinations:
- Resit examinations will be held as soon as possible after the ordinary exam and normally no later than September 15 for courses offered in the spring semester and February 15 for courses offered in the autumn semester. It is only possible to take the resit examination once, no later than at the beginning of the following semester.
- At resit examinations, the candidate is to retake the exam(s) which he/she did not pass at the ordinary examination.
- If the examination consists of several exams (portfolio), all the exams are to be evaluated at the resit examination.
- Assignment(s), i.e. home assignment(s) on individually selected topics, which were assessed as fail at the ordinary examination can be resubmitted as a revised version.
12. Student evaluation
The students are given the opportunity to evaluate the teaching in all courses twice:
- Approximately halfway through the course, in the form of a conversation between the teacher(s) and the students, or as written feedback to the teacher(s) and/or the Student Advisor for the discipline of which the course is a part.
- At the end of the course students are requested to complete a manual or electronic evaluation form that guarantees full anonymity.
II. Progression of the programme
i) General information
The one-year course groups must be taken successively since the programme in language and economics begins in the spring semester. The 6th semester is reserved for intermediate courses. Students who wish to proceed directly from the one-year course group to the intermediate courses in the same subject must therefore plan their studies so that the one-year course group in that subject is taken in the 4th and 5th semesters.
The languages require 90 credits of language study, and the joint course HIF-2510 must therefore be included in the one-year course group in economics. For the languages, the admission requirement for the disciplinary Master programmes are the same as in the Bachelor programme in language and literature: 90 credits for English, Finnish, French, German, Russian and Spanish.
1000-level studies in German will only be offered every other spring starting spring 2007, spring 2009 and so on. 2000-level studies in German will also only be offered every other spring starting spring 2008, spring 2010 and so on.
Below, examples of the recommended progression in the programme with intermediate courses in language and in economics are given.

1 It is recommended that the students start their studies abroad after they have acquired an academic basis in both language and economics. Stays abroad in economics (30 ECTS) should be taken in the 5th semester. If the stay abroad is incorporated into the language component, the time and the number of credits vary between the different languages. Contact the faculty, or see the faculty's web pages for further information.
2 For students who choose a language with 90 ECTS of required language courses (English, Finnish, French, German, Russian and Spanish), HIF-2510 Language and economics must be included in the one-year course group in economics.
