Department of Microbiology and Virology
The Department of Microbiology and Virology (DMV) is an integrated part of the Institute of Medical Biology at the Faculty of Medicine. The primary objectives for the Department are to perform high quality research and teaching in microbiology.
DMV is responsible for the medical microbiology curriculum in health care studies (medicine, pharmacy and dentistry) as well as the basic molecular microbiology courses for undergraduate and graduate students in biology. We collaborate extensively with the Department of Clinical Microbiology at The University Hospital of North-Norway that has national reference functions in the surveillance and detection of antimicrobial resistance in bacteria.
There are two main research units within DMV.
The Virology Research Group that focuses on cellular signalling and gene regulation in mammalian cell systems. The Microbiology Research Group that focuses on antimicrobial resistance in bacteria. Their respective research portfolio is described in more detail under each unit.
