Microbiology research group
The Department of Microbiology and Virology (DMV) belongs to the Institute of Medical Biology. (IMB), which is part of the Faculty of Medicine. Within DMV the Microbiology Research Unit has focused research activities within antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in bacteria. The AMR-research is a joint effort during many years with Department of Clinical Microbiology at the University Hospital of North Norway (UNN). Both the Norwegian Surveillance System for Antimicrobial Resistance (NORM) and the National Reference Centre for Detection of Antimicrobial Resistance (K-Res) are located here. We are now well established as the leading centre for AMR research in Norway and a recognised partner in international collaborations in this area. Central in our research is the molecular epidemiology of antimicrobial at a national level (local selection or clonal dissemination), the understanding of environmental factors and genetic mechanisms involved in the evolution of antimicrobial resistance, and the development of new antimicrobial strategies. In addition we have projects on the development of new molecular methods for detection of microorganisms including Schistosoma japonicum. The AMR-research project staff consists for the moment of five scientific staff members, two postdocs, seven PhD students, four technicians, and seven master students.
