Speak up!

As a student you have to perform in several fields, also orally. Prepared tasks or improvised inputs are required.

Are you afraid to speak up in large or small gatherings? In lectures or in study groups?  Maybe you fear you will forget what you have planned to say, get a dry mouth, shiver, loose your voice or blush.

Remember that being nervous before you speak in public is aggravating in itself. Sometimes you just have to bear the nervousness and make it your ally. The fear you feel inside will diminish and feel better once you get started.

You are not alone. Many of your fellow students experience the same problem, although it might seem as if they are in control of the situation. This might not comfort you, but it might help to know that most people can learn how to control this problem.

What can you do on your own?

Nothing will change if you do not tackle the problem. If you behave actively and constructively to the problem it can easily get worse over time.

Luckily there are many options, and many people have positive experiences making rather small efforts, all depending of course, on how large the problem is.

Take a challenge! This is central. In situations where you can stand out- do it! Use the reading groups and the lectures and challenge yourself. Start in situations where you feel comfortable and increase your challenges.

The reason why it might feel really bad is usually caused by the fact that your focus is on your self and how you feel. Try to move your focus to other persons or an object and away from you.

Whilst preparing, use relaxation-/ breathing techniques.

If it is a large presentation, get familiar with the location in advance and find out where your position in the room is, how the different equipment works etc.

Remember that the way you feel inside during a presentation is usually very different from the way people who listen to you perceive you.

If it is still very uncomfortable- seek help. The student's counselling service arranges "Speak up groups" every semester. These groups have waiting lists- many people are in the same boat. Contact us!

You can also contact us for individual conversations. Do not wait!
