Course terms: Autumn
Examination term: Autumn
Course co-ordinator: Bjørn Arntsen

Lecturers: Bjørn Arntsen
Rossella Ragazzi
Marit Gjertsen

Objectives:
This unit form a compulsory part of the Master`s in Visual Cultural Studies.

Course description:
The students will explore how to convey ethnographic stories, to create plots enabling these forms to evolve within social sciences. It is practice-based, where writing and filming are constantly associated and where students will practice the knowledge conveyed in theoretical lectures. The overall aim of the unit is to learn:

  • How to film by thinking montage and editing;
  • How to interpret a film technically and expressively, learning filmic language and a narrative structure;
  • How to identify recurring paradigms in storytelling; to develop skills in writing for cinema and documentary.

The course consists of four parts:

1) Narrative and montage
provides examples of the paradigms or recurrences in the practice of storytelling. Storytelling in a filmic form is presented by means of motion pictures and sound, oral and written texts, using various genres, and it is constructed by the researcher in an ongoing dialogue and shared authorship with the subjects. The course includes an analysis of various storytelling practices: from the oral tradition to the tale, from fiction, novels, movies to journals, chronicles, descriptions, dialogues, monologues, drama etc. The basic film form will be analysed through montage and its technique: editing. Montage is the theoretical approach consisting in shaping the space-time dimension of each film through cutting and matching series of scenes. Examples from the history of montage will be shown and basic editing language acquired through exercises tackling the aspects of rhythm and pace, rupture and continuity.

2) Film seminar
The students follow the screenings at SVF-3105 Representing reality through films

3) Technical editing
The course in technical editing gives an introduction to the use of the Media 100 editing suites

4) The editing of a film of 10-15 minutes' duration.
The editing of the film, which has already been shot as a part of the subject SVF 3101/3102, gives the possibility to apply the learning from the other subjects and from previous parts of SVF 3103 into the making of a filmic story. The editing will be done, under supervision of the responsible teacher, by the team of two students that did the shooting.

Teaching: Consists of lectures, seminars, and practical exercises with individual supervision. Course attendance is mandatory, i.e. only valid absences will be approved.

Course structure and duration:
The course will run for 17 weeks . During field-work there will be seminars twice a week where the students will present their work-in-progress. Course attendance is mandatory.

Syllabus:
Approx. 400 pages. See: Reading list for SVF-3103 :
