The programme is based on the national General Plan and Regulations for the 3-year Social Educator Training Programme, laid down by the Ministry of Education and Research 1 July 2004, with the legal authority of § 46, No 2 of the University College Act No 22 of May 12 th 1995. General comments The profession of the social educator has its origin in the care of the mentally disabled. The scope of the actual training and occupational function has been widened to include the care and social education of people with developmental impairments and functional disabilities.
The qualifications of social educators make them competent providers of services such as training, rehabilitation, care and nursing, including practical assistance, guidance and social support. The task of the social educator is to view the functionally impaired person's everyday life as a whole. The social educator also contributes to target-orientated stimulation, training and development and promotes the individual's independent mastery of everyday tasks and activities.
Career Opportunities Challenges related to the work with mentally disabled are central in the training; however, social educators are also competent to work with other user groups such as people with physical handicaps, age dementia, mental diseases, etc.
Most social educators are employed in various capacities in the municipal health services. They are also employed in social welfare offices, as educators personally assigned to mentally subnormal individuals, as non-institutional social workers in various social environments and as home counsellors for the mentally disabled who live in small, non-institutional residential units, in child and juvenile psychiatry, adult psychiatry, in institutions for the elderly, in caring for people with alcohol and drug abuse problems and in outreach work among young people.
