Cost of Living

The cost of living in Norway is among the very highest in the world. The State Educational Loan Fund (a national student bank) estimates the average expenses for students to be approximately NOK 8.000 per month for accommodation, transport, food, clothing and other necessities.

As an international student you will need a minimum of NOK 8,000 per month in order to cover basic expenses. During your first semester, you must be prepared to use an extra amount of money for setting up your household and for buying suitable clothing for the Norwegian climate and also textbooks for your studies. If you are not able to bring along warm clothes from your home country, it is important to have enough money with you to buy suitable clothing for the changing seasons. You will also have to provide for all necessities in your house, including pots and pans, duvets and sheets.

The Norwegian Directorate of Immigration will not grant you a residence and study permit unless you can document that you have sufficient funding.
