Longer lives and older populations add importance to research on ageing, which at NOVA is focusing both on ageing as a process, on older years as a phase of life, and on older people as a social group. Equally important is to study needs and effects of policies and practices such as pension policies and long-term care. NOVA is the major centre for social gerontological research in Norway, and has as such a responsiblity also for recruitment, training, and international networking in the field. The Norwegian Life Course, Ageing and Generation Study (norLAG) is the major research effort at the moment, designed as a longitudinal study of around 5 000 persons aged 40 and over. Main objectives are to explore the conditions and contents of ´vital ageing´ and quality of life in older years, to examine how local cultures and resources affect life course trajectories, and to provide knowledge needed for the development of sustainable policies and practices for an ageing society. Stability and change during the second half of life are examined in four major life domains: work and retirement, family and intergenerational relationships, coping and quality of life, health and long-term care.
