Research
IN NATURAL SCIENCES AND TECHNOLOGY
There is extensive research at the faculty that ranges from basic research in the natural sciences in biology, physics and chemistry to basic and applied research in specific fields in biotechnology, materials science and process technology. The scientific profile is influenced by the stipulated national priorities: nanotechnology, new materials, functional genome research, and biotechnology in general. The faculty has a number of strong point areas including light metals, process technology, process analysis, catalysis and petrochemistry, conservation biology, condensed matter physics and computational science.
The faculty works in partnership with industry and the public sector at home and abroad. There is extensive cooperation with SINTEF and numerous international research groups, particularly in European Commission-funded projects.
Strategic research priorities at the faculty:
Nanotechnology
Systems biology
Functional genome research
Materials technology
Energy and petroleum - resources and the environment
Marine and maritime technology
Medical technology
These are all closely related to NTNU's thematic priority areas.
The faculty offers doctoral degree programmes in all subject areas and 50 to 60 doctorates are awarded each year. We offer the following seven PhD programmes:
• PhD programme in biology
• PhD programme in biotechnology
• PhD programme in biophysics
• PhD programme in physics
• PhD programme in chemistry
• PhD programme in chemical process technology
• PhD programme in materials technology
