Absorption Technology Laboratory

Contact: Hallvard Svendsen

The Reactor Technology group in collaboration with SINTEF Materials and Chemistry has a substantial activity in the field of CO2 (and also other acid gases) removal from exhaust gas, process gases and natural gas. We study mainly technologies associated with absorption of CO2 into physical and chemical solvents using conventional absorption towers or new membrane contactors. Our work comprises both experimental work and rigorous modeling of the absorption processes.

The CO2 absorption laboratory contains:

  • Three apparatuses (wetted sphere, membrane contactor and string of beads) for measurement of absorption reaction kinetics and diffusivities with operating ranges 1-2 bar(0.02 kPa -2 Bar CO2 partial pressure), 10 - 80°C.

  • Three equilibrium apparatuses for measurement of gas/liquid equilibrium in the ranges 0.02 kPa -20 Bar CO2 partial pressure and 0 - 130°C.

  • One screening apparatus specially designed for rapid screening of new absorbents for CO2 capture from exhaust gas.

  • One apparatus designed for vapor/liquid equilibrium measurements in binary systems (absorbent volatility).

  • Calorimeter for determination of heats of reaction and specific heat.

  • Pilot scale continuous complete absorption/desorption apparatus. Fully automated to run 24 hours/day. Gas treating capacity about 200 m3/hour. Absorber ID 0.15 m, height 5 m, desorber ID 0.1m, height 4 m. Can be operated with both conventional towers and membrane units.

Modeling tools:

  • Conventional absorber/desorber models

  • Membrane absorber/desorber models

  • A range of equilibrium models from simplified to rigorous.

  • Kinetic and mass transfer models.

  • CFD-based modeling and access to the Trondheim Super Computer Centre (NOTUR)
