Division of Theoretical Physics

Head of Division: Johan S. Høye

  • Condensed matter physics
Mesoscopic physics and nanoelectronics. Strong correlations and novel quantum fluids.
  • Astroparticle physics
The origin of high energy cosmic rays and neutrinos, the role of neutrinos or hypothetical particles in astrophysics and cosmology, color superconductivity, quark-gluon plasma.
  • Statistical mechanics
    - Studies of equations of state and correlation functions of fluids and spin systems.
    - Studies of thermal behavior of the Casimir force.
  • Molecular modeling
Quantum mechanical modeling of molecular systems. Electronic structure, vibrational spectra, chemical reactions.

The illustration shows quantum mechanical tornadoes in the electronic and protonic superconducting components of extremely compressed hydrogen.

Neutrinos observed in Japan during 500 days and 500 nights (the Earth is transparent to neutrinos) made this picture of the Sun. Courtesy: R. Svoboda, Louisiana State University.
