The ojective of the course is to give the student an overview of current issues in social and cultural development in Africa south of the Sahara.

Through an anthropological perspective we will look at the relationship between the individual actor on one side and the social structures on the other, as it appears in African daily life both in urban and rural areas. Processes like modernization, urbanization and globalization will be discussed, with a particular focus on the relationship between the modern and the traditional. Using selected local and regional examples we will seek to illuminate the problems but also the possibilities Africa faces today, both when it comes to society and culture.

"Anthropological perspectives on Africa" is a course in the intermediate level and it is therefore recommended that the student has some credits in Anthropology or African Studies before starting this course.
