Student housing

Where will I live? One of the most important questions that students ask themselves when they come to a new place to study.

SiS housing is owned and operated by the Student Welfare Organisation in Stavanger (SiS), and international students are given priority for a single room in the student dormitories.

The application form for international students will be sent upon request or with your Letter of Acceptance.

The price is approx. NOK 2200 per month. Upon arrival, foreign students have to put down a deposit of NOK 4000.

In the following passages, you will find the main conditions of the housing contract and your stay in the student dorms:

Contracts usually cover one semester, and a full semester only. It is not possible to terminate a contract during the 1st semester.

Autumn semester: August 6 (approx.) - December 31.
Spring semester: January 2 - June 20.

Foreign students are normally guaranteed a single room with common living quarters (bathroom, kitchen and living room) in a student dormitory on the following conditions:

  • the contract is accepted for a full semester
  • the application from the student has reached the International Relations Office at UiS before the main application deadline 1 May 2007.

Vacant rooms are allocated every month throughout the year and exchange students are prioritised. Nonetheless, no advance guarantee can be given for students arriving in the middle of the semester.

Each student is responsible for paying his/her rent. The price is approx. NOK 2200 per month (heating and electricity included). An invoice will be sent to your accommodation address 15 days prior to the due date of the payment. Please note that the rent must be paid from the first day of the contract, regardless of the date you moved in.

Upon arrival, foreign students have to put down a deposit of NOK 4000 (NOK 6000 if you wish to open your telephone to make calls nationally and internationally). As long as all bills are settled upon departure, , the deposit will be paid back to the bank account indicated in the student dormitory reservation form.

All rooms are furnished and have an ISDN telephone line (cf. above) and a broadband Internet connection (PC excluded).

You will need to provide your own kitchen and cooking utensils (dishes, pots/pans, cutlery, etc.). You will also need a duvet (quilt), pillow, bedding and towels - these can be purchased at the SiS Housing Department/Office.

Each tenant is responsible for keeping the room clean and tidy. Unpaid rent, laundry charges, unpaid telephone bills and incomplete and dissatisfactory cleaning upon moving out will be deducted from your deposit of NOK 4000/NOK 6000.

A change in study plans or a change in the anticipated date of arrival should be reported without delay. Please contact the International Relations Office you have any queries regarding accommodation.
