EndNote enables you to store, organize and retrieve your literature references to books, articles, websites etc.

How do I access EndNote?
EndNote is available for use on most computers in the public computer rooms on campus.

EndNote X1 for Windows - install on your own PC New 18.02.08
If you are a Windows user and have access to the UMB network, you can download and install the most recent version of the program (EndNote X1).
Procedure:
1. Microsoft Word must be installed prior to the installation of EndNote.
2. Uninstall older versions before you install EndNote X1.
- Before you remove EndNote, back up your libraries (including corresponding .DATA folders), customized styles etc.
3. Download and install EndNote via UMB’s Intranet.
4. Update EndNote after installing.
- Open a connection to the Internet.
- Close all programs before updating.
- From Windows Start menu select: Programs : EndNote : Update EndNote.

EndNote X1 for Mac - install on your own computer New 18.02.08
If you use Mac and have access to the UMB network, you can download and install the most recent version of the program (EndNote X1).
Procedure:
1. Microsoft Word must be installed prior to the installation of EndNote.
2. Uninstall older versions before you install EndNote X1.
- Before you remove EndNote, back up your libraries (including corresponding .DATA folders), customized styles etc.
3. Download and install EndNote via UMB’s Intranet.
4. Update EndNote after installing.
- Open a connection to the Internet.
- From EndNote's Help menu, select EndNote Program Updates.

If you need help to install the software, please contact your local network coordinator (for staff) or the Student Computer Service.

What's new in EndNote X1 (latest version: 18.02.08):
• Compatible with Windows Vista and Microsoft Word 2007.
• Create groups to view and manage subsets of references.
• Each library can have up to 50 custom groups (expanded to 500 in X1.0.1).
• Display all authors for each reference in the library reference list.
• Use the new Quick Search tool to search all fields in a library or group.
• Connect is renamed to Online Search (Tools : Online Search).
• The Link to PDF field is renamed to File Attachment for organizing up to 45 files per reference.
• View file names with the icons in the File Attachment field.

EndNote styles for Master’s theses
The Harvard System of Referencing is often used in MSc theses (author-date method). A Harvard style follows the EndNote software, but we do not recommend using this style. The University Library has created a Norwegian and an English Harvard style for EndNote. If your thesis advisor does not specifically recommend another style, you can download and use one of these styles in your MSc thesis.

EndNote and Word
If you install EndNote after installing Word, EndNote commands appear on an EndNote submenu of the Tools menu in Word (Tools : EndNote). Your can also use the corresponding EndNote toolbar in Word for easy access (View : Toolbars : EndNote).
If the toolbar and menu don't appear in Microsoft Word, the solutions to your problems are well defined on the EndNote FAQs.

Import filters
For databases that do not enable full search options from EndNote, or when complete search functionality shall be maintained, it is possible to export references to a text file, which then can be imported into EndNote. This procedure requires an import filter in EndNote, which defines how the references are formatted. It is important to use the correct filter.
The EndNote software comes with several import filters.
