GENERAL INFORMATION
Established in 1986 as a centre at the Agricultural University of Norway (NLH), Noragric became the Department of International Environment and Development Studies at the renamed
Norwegian University of Life Sciences - UMB on 1 February 2005.
Noragric’s activities include research, education and assignments, focusing particularly, but not exclusively, on developing countries and countries with economies in transition. With more than 40 years collaboration between UMB and academic and professional institutions in Africa, Asia and South East Europe, Noragric has established a broad network of worldwide contacts.
Noragric's vision is to:
Contribute towards equitable development, sustained well-being of women and men, and sound environmental practices through collaborative activities that generate and exchange knowledge and provide education in the area of agricultural development, livelihood security and natural resource management.
For the period 2002-2007 Noragric has elaborated a detailed
Strategic Plan.
Noragric is not an independent institution, nor is it a funding agent for field projects or for independent research. As an academic department at UMB, Noragric's staff and students are part of the University and are proud of it. With a staff of more than 50 people from around the world, Noragric is a meeting place of cultures and views that is unique and enriching!
Our professional challenge
How to assist poor people to enhance their livelihoods in a sustainable way is one of the greatest challenges we are facing in the world today. The majority of poor people in developing countries live in rural areas and rely on natural resources for their livelihoods. Rural development, improved natural resource management and strategies to make agriculture more productive are critically important if poverty is to be reduced. The overall rationale for Noragric's activities in research, education and assignments is to contribute towards equitable development and community empowerment.
