Work migrants stay longer in Norway

The number of foreign persons with valid work permits in Norway has never been so high. The number of people who come to Norway with permits based on family reunion is also increasing. These are some of the main features that were presented on a press conference July 12.

As of July 1st 2007, 75 000 people were living in Norway with valid work permits. Almost a quarter of the work migrants work in construction. 81 per cent of the work permits are granted to men.

Polish citizens are on top of the statistics both for family and work migration. An increasing number of polish work migrants work for a longer period than what has been usual, and they consequently choose to bring their families to Norway.

Number of asylum seekers is stabile

The number of people who come to Norway with a permit based on work or family migration is increasing, while the number of asylum seekers is stabile. The group sylum seekers with no citizenship, mainly palestinians, has increased with close to 150 per cent compared to the same period last year.

The number of asylum seekers who are granted asylum, is higher than same period last year. This may indicate that more of the asylum seekers who come to Norway, has a real need for protection.

At the same time as the number of asylum seekers have been stabile the last years, there are less residents in the reception centres. This may be due to the fact that the people with permits are intergrated into the local communities faster.
