Open a Bank Account

In order to open a bank account in Norway and get a Norwegian debit card, you need to have either a Norwegian ID number or a D-number.

It is not mandatory to open a bank account, but students who have deposited money to SiB's Student Deposit Account should open a Norwegian bank account so that SiB can transfer the money to your account.

Students staying for more than six months

Students staying in Norway for more than six months have to apply for a Norwegian ID number. When you have received your Norwegian ID number, you can contact any bank and open a bank account. Remember to bring:

  • Passport
  • Documentation of your Norwegian ID number
  • Residence registration certificate (EU(EEA/EFTA citizens)
  • Residence card (non-EU/EEA/EFTA citizens)
  • Student ID (or Letter of Acceptance)

Students staying in Norway less than six months

Students staying in Norway for less than six months can apply for a D-number. A D-number corresponds to a Norwegian ID number, but is used for tax and bank purposes only.

To obtain a D-number, you must contact a bank to apply for a bank account, and the bank will then assist you in applying to the National Registry for a D-number as you cannot apply yourself. Please note that it may take four to six weeks to obtain a D-number.

You must bring the following documentation to the bank:

  • Letter of Acceptance
  • Passport

When your D-number is ready you can go to the bank and open an account. Please bring the following documentation:

  • Passport
  • Residence registration certificate (EU(EEA/EFTA citizens)
  • Residence card (non-EU/EEA/EFTA citizens)
  • Student ID (or Letter of Acceptance)
