Research Projects
My PhD research focusses on code-switching between Russian on the one hand, and Sámi and Komi on the other hand. Recordings of Sámi and Komi have sofar been made in Lovozero (Лӯяввьр) on the Kola Peninsula during our April and November 2007 fieldwork trips, another possible goal is Krasnoshchel'e. In these villages the local Sámi and Komi population have been in contact with Russian for the larger part of the 20th century. This has lead to widespread bilingualism and code-switching between the minority languages and Russian. My primary interest is in the lexical reasons for code-switching: do certain words or lexical groups trigger code-switching? And have some old loanwords from Russian become “code-neutral” in Sámi and Komi, which allows them to trigger a switch in both directions? I hope to find some answers to these questions in the years to come.
