SECOND BIANNUAL JOINT
NORTHUMBRIA/EARLI SIG ASSESSMENT CONFERENCE
June 23-25 2004
University of Bergen
ASSESSMENT 2004 BEYOND INTUITION
Main theme: Raising standards in formative and summative assessment
The conference will focus on aspects of formative and summative
assessment, and particularly address the issue of raising
standards of current assessment. The conference will offer a
platform to discuss innovation beyond intuition, based on
evidence from research and educational practice.
Research, educational practice and institutional policies
emphasise the increasingly productive variety of modes of
assessment. In many countries there is a fundamental
redefinition of the purposes and targets of assessment.
The conference will address a number of core questions:
How can different modes of assessment - including end-of-course
and in-course - serve summative or formative purposes? How can
summative and formative purposes be combined? In what ways do
they conflict?
Which standards are relevant for the various modes of assessment
and are they valid for both formative and summative assessment
purposes? Which evidence do we have of the standards of new modes
of assessment? What role might students, teachers and external
examiners play in the assessment process?
The hotel is beautifully situated by one of the fjords in Western Norway,
near the village Os, 45 minutes drive from Bergen. It is the perfect
setting for an international conference as well as for midsummer
celebration.
