Accommodation
Exchange students who have been admitted to Akershus University College are guaranteed student accommodation at a favourable price.
Most exchange students stay at the student home at Aaraasen, a 15-25 minute walk from the campus. This student home is run by the student welfare organisation OAS. The exchange student will get the key to the student home from the mentor on the day of arrival. The rooms are furnished and the bed has a pillow and duvet. As bed linen and kitchen utensils are not included, we have put together a “survival kit”, including linen and kitchen utensils, which the student can borrow by paying a deposit of NOK 300. This deposit will be refunded when the survival kit is returned. The mentor also buys groceries for about NOK 150 (sponsored by International Section at Akershus University College) to make sure that the exchange students have something to eat the first morning in a new country.
As of January 1, 2007, the rent will be increased at Aaraasen student home. A single room is NOK 3255 and a room in a doublette is NOK 2770. As of March 1, 2007, we will have two single rooms available with a fixed extra bed each, making it possible for two students to share a single room. If two students share the room, the price will then be NOK 1700 pr student. Each student will receive an invoice for the amount of money as soon as he/ she arrives.
As you can see, you have two alternatives when it comes to accommodation:
- Room with bed and bed linens, desk, chair, bookshelf, kitchenette equipped with kitchen utensils, pots and pans, and bathroom; or
- A doublette for two students. Each student has his own furnished room as above, but will share bathroom and kitchenette. Please remember to bring your own towels. The student home has a laundry room in the basement – you pay for use with your keycard.
The room at the student home must be kept clean throughout your stay. Thorough cleaning of the room, the bathroom and kitchenette must be done before leaving for your home country. You are allowed to have a visitor in your room for one week.
Cost of living in Norway
As a general guideline, the Norwegian State Educational Loan Fund estimates that the total monthly expenditure for students amounts to NOK 8000 (including housing).
Costs for food, recreation and travel may vary greatly from student to student according to habits and priority, but many students are able to bring down the cost of living considerably by cooking their own food.
