Standard Software Infrastructures for SCI-based Parallel
Systems
ESPRIT project 23174. HPCN Task 6.10 ESPRIT IV. Framework
Programme
Summary
The SISCI project addresses the need of HPCN applications for inexpensive
and powerful parallel distributed execution platforms. While such hardware
is becoming available from different vendors in form of workstation and
PC clusters with fast interconnects, standard software support for parallel
processing on these platforms is missing. SISCI is addressing workstation-
and PC clusters connected by the SCI
technology.
The project will provide this missing software by
- define and develop a low-level, standard interface SCI programming
layer
- develop de facto standard programming environments for SCI
- a Message Passing Interface (MPI) library
- a Parallel Virtual Machine (Pvm) library
- a POSIX compliant thread package (Pthreads)
- demonstrate a portable, highly efficient use of these software standards
in a range of communication-critical applications provided by the consortium.
See also the official synopsis for the project.

A early version of the
SISCI MPI test-bed is available.
