– They should resign
Due to poor performance, several political parties feel
Boligaksjonen (The housing campaigners) should withdraw from
their positions within the Norwegian Students’ Union (NSU).
Filip Rygg and Harald Victor Hove, leaders of the Christian
and the Liberal parties youth fractions respectively, are
not satisfied. They claim Boligaksjonen are letting down the
voters as well as other students. – This is something we have
observed over a long period of time, says Philip Rygg. It
is frustrating to me as a student politician to see democracy
being abused this way. Rygg and Hove are critical to how these
representatives are handling their duties. – One can’t prioritize
matters of own interest while in these positions. This is
spitting at your responsibilities. -By rejecting meetings
with the university’s management they show no interest in
cooperation, Rygg says. Ståle Holgersen of Boligaksjonen does
not agree. – This criticism is ridiculous. They are entitled
to have this opinion, but we will not resign. We have kept
our promises to the voters by working exclusively with housing
issues, rather than producing promises and lies, like Rygg
and Hove’s parties have done, he says.
One thousand new students
For this autumn’s intake, 6000 students have listed the
University of Bergen (UiB) as their first choice. Altogether,
there are 700 more applicants to Bergen than last year. The
big winner overall is the University of Oslo. (UiO). One believes
extensive marketing is the reason for UiO’s popularity. There
is not an increase in the number of applicants to the universities
in Trondheim and Tromsø.
Few mentors
Once again there is a struggle to find enough mentors for
new students. There will be an early start this year, on August
11th, which will make it even more difficult. As there are
up to 6400 new students in Bergen due, a lot of ‘mentors’
are needed. If there is a lack of volunteers, the result will
be less attention for each new student.
