Researcher education at UiT
A doctoral degree is the highest research degree awarded at Norwegian teaching institutions. At the University of Tromsø, like at other Norwegian universities, it is possible to complete an organised doctoral degree programme which leads to a PhD degree or choose to work outside an organised research programme with a view to gaining a Dr. Philos. degree. Both degrees are designed to qualify the candidate for research work at a high specialist level and other areas of work requiring a high level of research insight.
PhD (Philosophiae Doctor)The PhD degree, offered by all faculties and the Norwegian College of Fishery Science, is an organised research programme representing 180 credits (ECTS). The doctoral degree is scheduled to take three years of full-time study. The admission requirements for a doctoral degree programme are either completion of an integrated Master’s degree (300 credits), a Master’s degree (120 credits) and Bachelor’s degree (180 credits) or the equivalent education as approved by the faculty/Norwegian College of Fishery Science (NFH) for the specific programme. More precise details on the admission requirements are specified in the PhD regulations and under Doctoral degree programmes at faculties/NFH.
Agreement forms in:

Dr. Philos. (Doctor Philosophiae)All departments provide opportunities to complete a Dr. Philos. degree. The regulations for the Dr. Philos. degree stipulate that the thesis must be an independent scientific piece of work of high academic standard with respect to the formulation of problems, the precision of concepts, the methodological, theoretical and empirical basis, the documentation and form of presentation. As a result, the dissertation should contribute to the development of new knowledge and be of an academic standard appropriate for publication as part of the literature in the relevant field.
