PAPER FEES FOR EVERYONE

Now each student at UiB might have to pay 200 NOK a term for their use of copiers and printers. This is regardless of the amount of paper actually consumed. Master student Gro Bjerga thinks the proposition is unreasonable. She prefers to pay according to consumption.
      – The amount of paper you use can vary a lot. I doubt that my consumption equals 200 NOK a term, she says. Bjerga is not alone. Issam Aarag, leader of Bergen’s Sosialdemokratiske Studentlag (BSS) says this opposes the free-ofcharge principle.
      – This is simply charging students for their education, he argues: If this motion is agreed to, I will encourage people not to pay, Aarag says.
The background for the proposed introduction of these fees is UiB’s costs towards The Reproduction Rights Organisation of Norway. For 2003, this was 5.6 million NOK.
This organization is a private one, the purpose of which is to ensure incomes to those whose material is being photocopied. Students having to pay for paper and photocopying has been common practice at several colleges for a long time.

MUST TAKE EXAM DESPITE ILLNESS

Synnøve Eimer was ill and could not take exam last Wednesday. Today there is a resit, but she is still ill. If she fails, she has to do the whole term all over again. Despite a doctor’s notice she was marked as absent the first time. She now feels forced to show up for the resit, without being recovered or well prepared. The alternative is worse anyway.
      – This is unfair. I only get once chance because I was sick, she says: I have spent a lot of time which can prove to be wasted.

THE ADJECTIVES RULE

What is the difference between an ‘A’ and a ‘B’? An ‘A’ describes a
«brilliant» performance, while an ‘E’ means that «the basic requirements are fulfilled, but not more».
Over time, every third student will receive an ‘A’ or a ‘B’. Earlier, each faculty had its own grading system.
In most cases, grades are set according to a normal curve. However, in some cases, most of the students are given remarkably good marks.
