I.Programme description Study programmes II.Programme schedule III. Course catalogue
Qualification awarded: Master of Philosophy and Education
I. Programme description
1. Contents The teaching training course in languages and social studies is a five-year master´s degree programme consisting of two school subjects and a practical-educational training. The programme provides a teacher training particularly suitable for comprehensive schools up the fifth form (UK) / junior high school (USA) and upper secondary school (UK) / high school (USA). During the first three years, the students are to study two optional subjects of at least 90 and 60 ECTS. The line of study (minimum 90 ECTS) chosen forms the basis for study in greater depth in the 4th and 5th year of study. The subjects in years 4 and 5 are distributed among practical-educational, in-depth subject study and a didactically oriented master degree thesis.
2. Objectives, qualification awarded and professional prospects The course leads to a Master´s Degree in Social Studies with integrated practical-educational training. The combination of vocational study and a practical-educational training during the course gives a clear focus on schools, putting students in good stead to teach their subject.
The course to not qualify for admission to a PhD-programme.
3. Programme coordinator The Faculty of Humanities/programme board. The Faculty of Humanities, the Faculty of Social Science, the Norwegian College of Fishery Science and the Programme for Learning and Practical Education (PLP) co-operate on this programme and have a joint Programme Board.
4. Subjects involved English, Finnish, French, History, Scandinavian (Norwegian), Comparative religious studies, Russian, Economics, Social-anthropology, Sociology, Spanish, Political science, German and a Practical-educational training.
5. Admission requirement Higher Education Entrance Qualification. English, French and German require previous knowledge at high school level or equivalent.
6. Programme structure diagramme The programme consists of the following compulsory components:
- 30 ECTS first semester course
- 150 ECTS in-depth study of subject number one (line of study) including a master´s thesis, 40 ECTS (30 subject + 10 PPU)
- 60 ECTS subject number two
- 60 ECTS practical-educational training (PPU), of which 10 ECTS are part of the master's thesis
First semester course Two extra ex.fac. variants are offered, which are tailored to the course. Students can take one of them: i) Students of the Faculty of Humanities: EXF-0721 Examen facultatum with didactics (20 ECTS) ii) Students of the Faculty of Social Science and the Norwegian College of Fishery Science: PFF-1001 Examen paedagogicum + 1st subject course subject course (20 ECTS) Students must have taken one exam in one of the extra mural variants before they being their 4th year. According to the programme these are taken in the 1st semester.
150 ECTS in subject number one (line of study) The line of study consists of 150 ECTS in subject number one. The number ECTS depends on whether the line of study in years 1-3 requires in-depth study worth 90 ECTS. This in-depth study forms the basis for studies in the chosen subject in years 4 and 5, which in all lines of study are worth 60 ECTS. 30 of the 60 ECTS are assigned to the master's degree thesis.
60 ECTS subject number two All lines of study are also offered as 60-ECTS groups, with the exception of Social anthropology, Sociology and Political science. One course group in Social science is offered as compensation for each one of these subjects. Students who choose Social anthropology, Sociology and Political science cannot choose the Social science course groups as subject number two. The programme allows for students to take a science subject as teaching subject number two.
60 ECTS practical-educational studies In years 4 and 5, practical-educational training and subject training are combined, with a value of 60 credits ECTS. The practical-educational part is divided between courses in education studies, specialist didactics and school practice.
Optional courses Depending on the choice of first semester course and line of study, the programme includes up to 10 ECTS worth of optional courses during years 1-3. i) Students of the Faculty of Social Science and the College of Fishery Science can choose the 1st subject course among the subjects which are part of the course of study and include the subject course in the line of study/60 ECTS group. Allowance is made for an optional course worth 10 ECTS.
Specific recognition In the event of a course being interrupted the student concerned can apply to be recognised for another programme. Other programmes do not, however, qualify to teach unless the student takes a bachelor degree in at least one teaching subject plus a one-year practical-educational training. Students who are not taking part in the programme can apply for specific recognition at any time before their 4th year. Before commencing the 4th year, however, they must have taken an exam in one of the extra mural variants that form an obligatory part of the programme. See above.
7. Master´s degree thesis The master´s degree thesis corresponds to 40 ECTS, of which 30 ECTS for the subject and 10 ECTS for the didactics related to the practical-educational plan. The master´s degree thesis is a brief scientific treatise, 40-60 pages in length on a particular subject within the field of study and topics in which the student concentrates in the master´s component of the programme. The work must also have a subject-didactic perspective. A tutor is appointed from the subject concerned, as usual main tutor and one from the PLP. The theme must be approved by the tutors. Students will also have the opportunity, on application to the programme board, to write a 30 ECTS master´s thesis in the student's main subject. Students are given a tutor from their chosen line of study. The assignment can have a subject-didactic perspective and a co-tutor can be appointed from the PLP. Assignments are usually written individually, although they can be written in groups. Grading is according to the letter grades A - F and group work will be given a grade common to all members of the group. The assignment and oral exam account for the same. Oral exams are individual. Failing an oral exam means automatic failure of the final exam. Both tutors participate in the exam committee in addition to one outside censor.
