The Five-year integrated Master of Science and Education programme
The programme is part of the integrated five-year programme in education at the University of Tromsø and is one of three ways in which one can become qualified for the teaching profession by means of programmes undertaken at the University.
Contents
The programme is a 5-year master’s programme and consists of subjects from different academic disciplines as well as a pedagogic/didactic part. During the first three years the student largely takes academic courses in addition to ex.phil (10 course credits) and a pedagogic/didactic introductory course (ex.paed, 10 course credits). Courses in the academic subjects will be the same as those taken in the rest of the scientific degree programmes. The final year will contain a practical-pedagogic section (PPU – teacher training, 50 course credits), an academic section (30 course credits) and an independent project (40 course credits). If the major work on the PPU-programme is integrated in the master’s project then 10 course credits are transferred from that programme to the master’s project itself. See the PPU web pages at http://uit.no/plp/1134/
Objectives and professional prospects
The programme provides specialisation in two sciences and covers the competency requirements for the teaching of these subjects at high school.

The Curricula
The curriculum is dependent upon which combination of subjects is to be taken and in which sequence. Beneath you will find various examples of curricula for the various subject combinations.
Chemistry and biology
Physics and mathematics
Biology and mathematics
Chemistry and mathematics
Target group and admissions requirements
Ideally the programme is aimed at those students who wish to teach science subjects at high school.
Admissions requirements are general education competence although from and including admissions year 2005/2006 the following admission requirements will apply.
Recommended previous knowledge: see the curricula for the various subject combinations.
Language of instruction
Norwegian
Elective subjects
Elective subjects can be further specialisation in both or one of the student’s major subjects, subsidiary subjects, pedagogic courses and possibly in introductory computer science topics dependent upon the theme chosen for the independent project.
Teaching and assessment methods
Student exchange
The programme is designed such that it is possible to take a foreign sabbatical of one semester’s duration. Those courses taken at the foreign institution must be equivalent to courses in the curriculum and must be agreed in advance. You will find more information here
Qualification awarded
Master of Science and Education
Access to further studies
The Five-year integrated Master of Science and Education programme qualifies the candidate for admission to the doctoral programmes (PhD).
Other regulations
Students who leave the programme after three years will be awarded a bachelor’s degree. They will not however be qualified for a permanent teaching post at a school. Such a bachelor’s degree will however qualify the student for admission to an academic master’s programme providing the various subject groups have been combined in such a fashion that the admissions requirements for discipline oriented master’s programme have been satisfied.
Supplementary regulations for the education programmes at the Faculty can be found here
