4. Description of Studies
According to the classic definition, Education (Pedagogy) is the study of education and teaching. In modern times it is usual to distinguish between three main areas in the subject area: education, study and training, and the straightforward transmission of knowledge in general terms. All three of these areas affect and relate to one another. The subject area of Education is characterized by a series of different theoretical traditions of a normative, descriptive and analytical character. The subject area has a long tradition in the fields of philosophy, history of ideas, psychology and sociology. The educational system, the child's adolescent condition and socializing, different forms of knowledge and teaching environment, together with education policy, are central areas of research in Education. In educational studies at the University of Tromsø, research focusing on Sami and multicultural relations occupies a central position.

5. Standards of Competence
Master's degree studies build further on the knowledge and skills that are acquired through bachelor degree studies, with a specialization in Education. The teaching aim that is particularly emphasized at master's level is to be able to formulate questions that lead to an acquisition of new knowledge, to analyse and compare alternative theories within the same field, to be able to analyse empirical data material with the help of theory, and to identify different basic positions in the field, as these are expressed in different academic works. A principal aim of these studies is to train students to be able to work independently, critically and self-critically, by illustrating a set of circumstances from different points of view.

From a professional point of view, the bachelor programme in Education provides a qualification that is particularly suited to work in the educational system, but also to other types of work in both the public and private sectors. The training is suitable for professions where the work involves teaching, education administration, teaching environment arrangements, advice, executive operations, accounts assignments, etc. The individual student will, to some extent, be able to influence the professional direction of his/her master's degree in Education through a choice of supporting disciplines and subjects for the master's dissertation.

The master's degree in Education is a qualification for acceptance to dr.polit. studies in Education.

6. Academic Organization:
Studies will be organized as 10- and 20-credit subjects, together with work on a master's degree dissertation worth 60 credits. Each student will be allocated a supervisor for the dissertation work. The master's dissertation will be 70-90 pages in length; the deadline for submission is 15 May in the Spring semester and 20 November in the Autumn semester.

Subjects:

Subjects PED-3001, PED-3050, PED-3051 and PED-3900 are compulsory for a master's degree in Education. In addition, students choose two optional subjects from subjects PED-3002 – PED-3009 and SVF-3001. Students with equivalent training in other academic fields or teaching environments, which correspond to PED-3001, PED-3050, PED-3051 and optional subjects PED-3002 – PED-3009, may apply for this to be taken into account.

PED-3001 is a 20-credit subject, which is taught over two semesters.

The optional subjects on offer may vary. Demand and the resource situation in the institute will determine which subjects will be taught in which particular semesters.

7. Student exchange:
A period of study abroad may be applicable as fieldwork or other collection of material for the master's degree dissertation. Students may also read for subjects at universities abroad and apply for these to be accepted.

8. Teaching and Examination Procedures:
Teaching will take place by means of lectures, seminars and personal supervision. The subjects PED-3002 – PED-3009, PED-3050 and PED-3051 will conclude with an essay that will be awarded an academic grade. SVF-3001 concludes with a home-based examination. In subject PED-3001, students write two home assignments (one in each semester), which will be awarded an academic grade.

The master's degree dissertation (PED-3900) is examined by means of a graded dissertation, the delivery of a lecture on a set topic and an oral examination of the syllabus, linked to the theme of the dissertation.

9. Study Progression (advisory):
