No more cash for universities
Norway’s universities lack 140 million NOK to compensate
for inflation and increasing wages. Kristin Clemet, who is
Minister of Education and Research, says these expectations
are unrealistic. -This makes the quality reform hard to carry
out, according to headmistress Kirsti Koch Christensen. She
illustrates this by pointing to how the universities loyally
and enthusiastically have carried out their duties in regards
to the implementation of the quality reform. -Demanding such
a reform without providing the appropriate funding puts the
universities in an awkward position Koch Kristensen regrets.
Several politicians agree that there has been insufficient
funding for universities.
Still summer jobs available
According to Aetat, the employment bureau, there are still
chances to get that summer job. -The fact is, that only 30
percent of all vacancies are advertised. Guttorm Johnsen at
Aetat’s job centre in Bergen recommends that one contacts
potential employers and actively promotes oneself. On May
6th, there will be a summer job fair at the university’s careers
centre. There one will have the chance to present a resumé
to temp agency Adecco. Last year, about one in 10 of those
who applied in this way, ended up being offered employment.
Anne Aksnes of Adecco says her office isn’t certain yet about
which jobs will be available. – We depend on companies informing
us about their needs. For the job fair there will be a number
of positions advertised, and mid-May we will have a good overview,
she says.
