Students kicked out as king arrives
Last Monday the king arrived to open the new Bygg for biologiske
basalfag (BBB). 200 invited guests were present while students
were kept away. - Police «greeted» us one hundred meters from
the building’s entrance. We were told that all teaching had
been cancelled. We couldn’t get in or stay in the vicinity,
says first-year medical student Tomas Sørbø. For example,
study halls and the canteen were closed. Other students Studvest
has talked to, feel the same way. Johs. Teigland, who manages
the Faculty of Medicine says the invited guests hold various
positions within the medical community. Teigland doesn’t think
students have reason to complain. - All 4.000 who are associated
with this building could obviously not have attended, he says.
Big Brother at Fantoft
The Student Welfare Organization (SiB) intends to require
transcripts of tenants’ scholastic performances. This March,
SiB initiated the practice to ensure that new tenants really
are full-time students. - Wanting to make sure that those
who inhabit the residences really are students is reasonable,
but asking for such information from everybody is hopeless,
says Olav Handeland, who is main spokesman at Alrek students’
home. SiB has temporarily suspended the practice after complaints
from tenants and their representatives.
New students’ housing
Bergen has the lowest rate of students’ housing in Norway.
Now there are some new ones being built at Gyldenpris. Today
the Student Welfare Organization (SiB) has 2.800 housing units
available for students today. That’s one room for every ten
students. The government’s goal is a rate of 20 percent. The
new building has a budget of 72 million NOK. The construction
of the four floors started this July. At a cost of 3-4000
NOK a month 157 students will be accommodated from next spring.
