Organisation
The Diploma of Teacher Education is a practical professional training course for trainee teachers. The students who attend this course are qualified in a variety of university subjects or have their subject education from other institutions at an equivalent level. Their aim is to become qualified teachers at Middle School, Lower secondary level, Sixth-form College as well as in adult education. The course is offered as a full-time and a part-time flexible distance education course and both require compulsory attendance. The full-time course covers one year and starts in the Autumn term. The part-time flexible distance course, covers a two year study period and starts in the Spring term. The course gives 60 ETCS. This qualification can also be acquired through an incorporated study in an M.A. Degree.

The aim of the course is to qualify students for a wide variety of situations in the teaching profession. Therefore it seeks to give students both theoretical knowledge about education and practical educational training, as well as aiming to develop a positive attitude and interest towards development work in school.

Course contents
The course consists of both theoretical studies and practice and is divided into three units:
Education, 30 ECTS.
General/vocational subject didactics, 30 ECTS.
Practical School Experience 14 weeks

The five main components for educational theory are:
  • The teaching and learning environment
  • Childhood, youth and adults in learning and development
  • A perspective of school, culture and society
  • School organization
  • Teachers and the teaching profession.

Didactics as a subject is concerned with a subjects` place in an historical setting and studying its develoopment from an academic subject to its position in the classroom. Subject specific didactical theory is concerned with the experiences, understanding, knowledge and use of the specific subject in a classroom situation so that learning takes place.

The full-time study course consists of four compulsory theory-periods, two in each term.
The part-time flexible study course is organized on a basis of 10 face to face meeting sessions.

    Practice School Experience
Practical school experience is an important part of the whole course. In the part-time flexible course, the subjects taught by the trainee teacher are the basis for their practice. Trainee teachers employed at least 50% during the entire course should receive at least half of their practice period in their mentor`s class or workshop. Students without employment as trainee teachers during the entire or part of the course usually have their practice in the class or workshop of their mentor.

The fulltime course includes practical school experience of 14 weeks length. The trainee teacher’s work load per week should correspond to a teacher`s work week. Students are expected to use their entire working time during this period either in actual practice situations or with work in connection with their texts required for a portfolio assessment.

Therefore it is essential that students together with their mentors come to an agreement as to how much time should be spent on planning the contents of lessons and mentor meetings, at the beginning of the period of practice. The required number of lessons to be taught by trainee teachers during a practice period is 8 to10 per week. This requirement applies to students whether they have one or two school subjects. Students in pair practice should teach 8 to 12 lessons per week.

    Admission requirements
The Diploma of Teacher Education requires one of the following types of educational background:
