Reading rooms

All together there are 67 seats. One room will be used for stationary computers, but all reading rooms have plugs for Internet and some of these rooms will be regulated so that students with their own laptop can use these.

You need to apply for a seat in one of the reading rooms and should address your application to Katlin Roovik on e-mail: kar029@student.uit.no where you also must specify if you need:

To get a key, you need to pay NOK 250 deposit in the bookshop; Akademisk Kvarter. You bring the receipt to Drift, which is located in the same corridor as the reading rooms, that is, house 5, floor 2. They will programme your student card to function as a key card, and you will also get a key to the reading room. Drift has opening hours:

  • Monday12:00 pm 13:00 pm
  • Wednesday 12:00 pm 13:00 pm
  • Friday 12:00 pm 13:00 pm

How to apply for a seat/desk in the reading rooms:

All master students within nominal length of study can apply for a seat/desk in one of the reading rooms and will be ranked first when seats/desks are allocated. Depending upon the number of applicants, some students should be prepared to share desk with another student.

  • Seats in the smallest reading rooms will, when possible, be allocated to students on their second year writing their master thesis.
  • Students that are behind time according to their study programme rank lower when allocated a seat and need to apply for each extra term they want to use a seat in one of the reading rooms.

The closing date for application for both groups of students (they on nominal length study as well as those who are behind time) are:

  1. December 1 for spring term
  2. August 1 for fall term

The application form is to be addressed to the inspector at your programme.

Absence from your seat – inform your inspector

If you plan NOT to use your seat for a period of time of 4 days or more, you need to report it to the inspector on your programme. Your desk should be tidy (so that other students can use it) and you should put a note on your desk with information about the period of time of your absence.

What happens if you fail to report absence?

If you fail to report absence and there are students on a list waiting to get allocated a free seat, you risk losing your seat if you absence lasting a month or more.

Note that only absence that is related to your study, illness etc can be considered as valid reason for absence. Part-time job and other private activities are not.

Your desk will be cleared and the content of your locker will be emptied and stored away. You can contact head of administration Mayvi B. Johansen at Department of Social Anthropology, to retrieve your personal belongings: mayvij@sv.uit.no or phone: 776 44 591.
