Kvarteret faces gale

Students’ house Kvarteret will most likely have a deficit of 400.000 NOK this year. This is a problem bad enough, but it is only one of the matters Kvarteret’s new board has to deal with. The annual meeting at Kvarteret will be held this Sunday, and here are some of the challenges:
• Kvarteret’s board doesn’t have a list over previously approved investments.
• Investment of more than 1.510.000 NOK has been approved but projects have not been completed.
• Two internal work groups are dysfunctional.
– This situation is too bad, says Line Grønstad of Kvarteret’s old administrative board. (KVAST) Still, KVAST is praised prior to Sunday’s meeting.
Anticipated incomes have failed, for example the expected 540.000 NOK from UiB for cleaning purposes amounted to only 210.000 NOK. A new strategy plan for Kvarteret has been launched. Projects which will have priority include refurbishment of the building’s third floor as well as upgrading the back yard. Discussion of the new strategy plan and election of a new leader will take place during Kvarteret’s general assembly at 2 PM on November the 23rd.

Japanese is popular

The number of students taking Japanese has multiplied by five this term. Usually there are 10 to 15 students compared to the 53 having signed up this term.
Headmistress Ingrid Koch Christensen is happy to see the increase.
– The reason for this may be people’s increasing interest in foreign, exotic languages. There also are more people taking an interest in studying the Middle East, Christensen says.

The black hole

Experts call students a black hole when it comes to oral health. Students seldom visit the dentist. The reason? It’s too expensive.
As one has to pay for visits to the dentist when turning 20, a lot of people don’t go there until it’s really necessary. Several factors, like snacking, affect students’ oral health. However, one is advised that frequent visits will come out cheaper in the long run than having major repairs later. The frequency of students’ visits to the dentist has declined the last ten years.
