Extensive Flood Damage
TV production equipment worth about NKr1.4m may have been
damaged or destroyed when 30.000 liters of water flooded an
editing room. The equipment, which is housed in the basement
of the Social Sciences Building (SV), is used by TV production
students. Many student exam films as well as films due to
be shown at the Grimstad Short-film Festival may have been
destroyed. A computer firm in Oslo will try to recover as
much information as possible from the hard disks affected.
Students and staff managed to unplug the equipment and save
almost all the irreplaceable film-footage stored in the basement.
The flooding was caused when construction workers inside the
old BT building were testing out some water pipes. – Many
students may experience long delays in taking their finals,
which may in turn lead to further delays in applying for further
studies, says Professor Katherine Goodnow from Media Studies.
Please Go Away
A «raid» was carried out this spring to try and weed out
non-UiB students who were taking up seating in the study areas
of the Ulrike Pihls university building. Several business
students from NHH and BI who live centrally do their studying
at UiB study halls, leaving UiB students with nowhere to study.
The raid had very little effect, and some students were put
off by the fascist-like approach carried out by the security
firm, Securitas. – Our plan is to introduce electronic key
cards in order to regulate entrance into study areas, but
for the time being, I would encourage students to confront
those not studying at UiB, says faculty director Lise Gundersen.
Poor Knights
The male choir, Arme Riddere (Poor Knights), cannot find
anywhere to practice. They were no longer allowed to use Kvarteret,
where they had been practicing regularly, because so many
other organizations needed room. – We only have one storage
closet at Kvarteret, and when another group is using the room
where the closet is, we can’t even use that. The situation
is detrimental to our productivity and our musicality. The
best solution would to have a larger cultural activities center,
says an exasperated choir director Kjell Hugaas.
