Unsafe windows at Nattland Studentby:
– Russian roulette with tenants
SiBs ongoing upgrading of the windows at Nattland Studentby
has become a farce. The new windows do not comply with the
current fire safety regulations. – The windows are too small.
There is no doubt that this is illegal. Asser H. Dale of the
Bergen Fire Department names SiB as the responsible party.
If there were a fire on the ground floor, the only escape
route is via the floor above. Compared to the old windows,
the new ones are of the same measurements, 50 by 60 centimetres,
but the new ones are hinged in an even more awkward way. Henrik
Espedal, who organizes volunteer maintenance at Nattland,
had to point out to SiB how the windows being installed were
in fact illegal. Dale of the fire department reckons the easiest
short-term measure will be to install fire alarms and a sprinkler
system.
No more money for student Internet site
SiB has decided to not provide any more funding for the
Internet site student.no, so its future is uncertain. Its
manager, Eirikur Ingolfsson, feels the site will survive.
One assumes the students’ unions of Oslo and Trondheim will
back the project. SiB regrets the 700.000 NOK it has spent
the project, which has had a budget of about 20 million NOK.
- We regard this as a loss, but we have learnt something,
says Vibeke Herikstad of SiB. Student.no has been criticized
for its poor contents and few visitors. Sarcastically, Herikstad
remarks: «Do you know anyone who uses the site?»
New head at Kvarteret
Today’s board at the Kvarteret students’ house initially
threatened with its resignation, but the motion did not come
into action. The newly elected leader at Kvarteret, Eva Nordskog,
calls this behaviour unprofessional. She feels the resolving
talks should have come earlier. Nordskog feels Kvarteret is
a well-functioning unit, but matters can and need to get better.
– Disputes are solved through conversation, she says, hinting
towards the recent mess concerning the latest investment plan.
Nordskog is a veteran volunteer at Kvarteret, and she names
the diversity of different people working there as her main
inspiration.
