Music student is thrown out
Israeli music student Daniel Sabbah has to come up with
112.000 NOK within eight days. If not, The Directorate of
Immigration (UDI) will force him to leave the country. Two
weeks ago, Sabbah received a letter dated October 28th, stating
how he does not meet the financial requirements for residence
in Norway. When Daniel Sabbah was enrolled at the Grieg Academy
on a piano course, he had already lived in Norway for a year.
As there was no reply to his application for further residence,
he assumed all was in order. – If you are short of money,
you can always go to Israel and harvest oranges. This was
the answer the international section of Bergen’s police station
gave. However, Olav Wolf at that office says Sabbah’s deadline
for issuing a complaint will be estimated from the date he
received the letter in question. Wolf also offers an excuse
for the orange joke!
Millions spent on software
The University of Bergen (UiB) spends about one million
NOK a year on Microsoft’s software. The universities in Norway
combined generated sales of about 5,5 million NOK for Microsoft
last year. But there are alternatives. If you use the Linux
operating system (OS) and Open Office or Star Office for word
processing, presentations and spreadsheets, there are amounts
to be saved as these are free to download off of the internet.
In the long run, one wishes to switch to open-source software.
Student Trond Bjørnstad, who is majoring in informatics, says
Linux is sometimes less user-friendly, but much more reliable
than Windows. He uses Linux at school and Microsoft’s Windows
at home.
Opposing war is waste of time
– The working committee of student union NSU is not honoring
its duties when they spend time opposing war rather than working
with student politics, says Audun Sommerli Time. He is head
of the students’ vocational board at NHH as well as junior
politician. Time says that a war against Iraq doesn’t concern
student politics. He feels NSU-Bergen is neglecting important
issues. NSU nationally has remained neutral on this issue,
but there will be a debate concerning the matter at the national
conference towards the end of April.
