InterMedia's history
Background
InterMedia was etablished in 1998 to investigate challenges and possibilities in the emerging field of ICT, media and learning environments.
In the beginning
- Focusing mainly on conducting research, InterMedia was curiously enough established with a staff consisting primarily of technical personnel. This staff originated from three units at the University of Oslo involved in audiovisual production. The scientific staff increased gradually.
- During the first three years the centre staff was spread on four campus sites. The real integration of InterMedia staff and competences began in 2001 when InterMedia moved into the Oslo Innovation Centre
(Forskningsparken). The new facilities were designed particularly for InterMedia to promote research, development and audiovisual productions. The location was also part of a strategy for creating better conditions for collaboration between related interdisciplinary research units in the field of ICT, communication and learning.
Afterwards
- InterMedia was evaluated in 2002. The University of Oslo concluded to the continuation of InterMedia.
- Reorganisation into three inter-related activity areas: Research - Lab - Mediation
- Involved in the process of establishing and carrying through a strategic five-year plan for Flexible Learning
at the University of Oslo.
Present
- At present InterMedia has a small, but multi-skilled staff of researchers, media developers, audiovisual producers, programmers and administrative support personnel. The scientific staff incorporates a core group of senior staff and a group of PhD students and Postdoc researchers.
- Coordination of strategic research activities at the University of Oslo: CMC
- Competence and Media Convergence (2002 - 2007), Digital design (2006 - 2009)
- Increased involvement in EU activities: Network of Excellence and projects.
- An Evaluation board has been created to perform an annual screening of the activities at InterMedia with the purpose of making informed decisions on future development of the centre.
- Formation of four thematic research clusters within InterMedia: Design and Learning in Education, ICT and Learning at Work, Communication Design and Case Design.
