Combining wiki, blog and mobile phone: More than 100 students have now used GIDDER in connection with their visits to Astrup Fearnley Museum
Gidder is a research design project that combines wiki, blog and mobile phone technologies to support high school students interpreting works of contemporary art across two settings, classroom and museum. Students use their own mobile phones to blog interpretations of artworks in a specially designed wiki. Curator Hanne Beate Ueland at Astrup Fearnley Museum has collaborated on the design of the prototype, and has developed the educational material for the wiki. By now more than 100 students from three different high schools have tried GIDDER at Astrup Fearnley Museum.

Anniken Larsen Furberg co-authors article on the usage of mobile phones in The Nordic Journal of Digital Literacy
Putting mobile literacies into focus
In a new article in Nordic Journal of Digital Literacy(Digital Kompetanse)Anniken Larsen Furberg and co-authors Annita Fjuk, Hanne Cecilie Geirbo and Per Helmersen investigates how the transformative relationship between people, culture and artifacts is vital for understanding digital literacies.
This argument is approached through introducing the concept of mobile literacies which is indivisibly related to usage of mobile phones in cultural practices. Case studies concerning mobile phone usage in Bangladesh show that SIM-switching and missed calls have developed into powerful artifacts in people's lives through facilitating social needs and providing certain norms of communication. The article thus illustrates central socio-cultural aspects that we find important to consider in understanding digital literacy.

In this article Ingeborg Krange and Sten Ludvigsen analyze and discuss possibilities and limitations in students' conceptual knowledge construction while using computer-based 3D models designed to support science. They find that although students manage to solve given problems they still have difficulties to combine concepts into larger conceptual units. By comparing different educational settings it becomes obvious that this most of all has to do with how the school handle curriculum based problems.
The most vital issue for the school as an institutional actor seems to be to complete the task. In this sense conceptual issues play a secondary role. The authors argue that a redesign of the computer based 3D models cannot change the school's way of handling curriculum based problems. However, a redesign might contribute to bring forward conceptual issues and help students to link concepts into a greater whole. Krange and Ludvigsen suggest that including additional aspects related to the curriculum based problems will make it likely that conceptual issues also will be discussed as part of the problem solving processes.
Computer games and learning has become an important topic for research during the last few years. Research and theorizing on games have particularly circled around two issues. The first is how computer games are effective learning environments and thereby constitute interesting learning design models. The second is how games themselves can be used for learning, particularly how games can be used to situate learning in regard to more realistic and authentic problem solving.

EssayCritic: A Pilot Study of a Computer Supported Essay Critiquing System
[Jan Are Otnes] has delivered his master thesis EssayCritic: A Pilot Study of a Computer Supported Essay Critiquing System to the Department of Informatics at the University of Oslo.
This predominantly qualitative case study has been concerned with the use of a student essay critiquing system, named EssayCritic, in a collaborative setting with 26 students aged 16-17, at a Norwegian high school. It was done in close co-operation between InterMedia at the University of Oslo, Norway and Hong Kong Baptist University, Hong Kong.
The goal has been to study how EssayCritic can help students writing essays in general, in particular the effect of collaboration in pairs. EssayCritic uses Latent Semantic Analysis, LSA, to compute feedback (critique) by comparing the students' essays toward model essays collected and prepared by teachers or domain experts.
All the students found the system useful in the role of providing critique, whereas the praising part was slightly less appreciated. The suggested sub themes were especially beneficial for the low-achieving students because it had the effect of stimulating those who experienced writing block. For all the students organization of the essay was under-prioritized, even if this was stressed prior to the writing. The focus group organized their work in two different roles, "driver and navigator," which can be classified as collaboration pattern, and the majority of the students were positive towards working in pairs. Feedback from the students about collaboration frequently included terms like stimulating "different ideas" and "discussion".
In sum, EssayCritic provided a valuable feedback for the students to reflect upon their essay and to give them suggestions for further writing. The system affords collaboration and was a positive element for the students when they wrote their essays. It seems like EssayCritic is especially useful for low-achieving students, but also high-achieving students seems to appreciate the use of EssayCritic, despite the fact that they also were critical to its use (believed it hindered individual creativity).
Multidisciplinary action to meet challenges in math learning
There is a raising concern for knowledge in mathematics and quests for more adequate pedagogical approaches to math learning.

The group will develop experimental design and new approaches to the use of ICT in math learning. An important goal is to generate innovative project proposals and ideas.
Guiding "cut and paste": Tweaking wikis for education and advancement of knowledge
New research project investigates future practices in today's schools
Previous research has documented that teachers tend to have a rather passive role in ICT based learning. We know that pupils cut and paste a lot when they use ICT. However, we do not know much about how such resources should be guided. How can teachers help - and be facilitated to help - their pupils to find, interpret, choose, integrate, and further develop web-based information?
The project acronym TWEAK means to adapt or redesign existing technology to particular needs. The TWEAK project will design new functions in a wiki to support such processes, thereby making the wiki into a learning environment.
A wiki is a website or similar online resource which allows users to add and edit content collectively and thereby supports collaborative authoring and knowledge production.
The project will focus on functions in the wiki that support the cooperation processes in knowledge development. It will do so by focusing on task design and design of specific functions such as categorizing, scrapbooking, logging, getting direct feedback, etc.
TWEAK is a multidisciplinary project that involves both educational science, informatics and communication design. The ultimate goal is to develop and describe good models for innovative use of ICT in educational practice.
Two upper secondary schools in Oslo participate in the project, both in the development and use of the wiki.

InterMediaforskere forteller om nye muligheter og nye utfordringer innen IKT og læring på Faglig-pedagogisk dag 3. januar
Morgendagens praksiser i dagens skole

Summary
In this thesis, we have investigated how an open source web portal can be used in a business context. This investigation required development of components for a web portal to meet the company's needs.
The motivation for this thesis was to design a web portal to organize the rapid growth of information and to improve the communication both internally and externally. The company that we collaborated with experienced expansion of the working staff, as well as in the customer base. Because the requirements for the web portal were uncertain, the development demanded a lot of communication and collaboration between us, as developers, and the company. With help from the Agile methodology and Participatory Design we were able to clarify the requirements and to overcome the problems during the development.
We have especially utilized Agile's Extreme Programming method as the developing technique. We argue that by applying this method in the given context, we attained the necessary foundation needed for the successful realization of the project. In addition, in situations where we supplemented it with techniques from Participatory Design; we gained a better understanding of the components to be made.

Ambivalence Towards Convergence. Digitalization and Media Change InterMedia researchers Andrew Morrison and Synne Skjulstad contribute with the chapter 'Talking Cleanly about Convergence'. The book is one of several publications resulting from the strategic program CMC - Competence, Media and Convergence at the University of Oslo. The editors are Tanja Storsul and Dagny Stuedahl.
Concepts of convergence and converging processes have triggered considerable attention and activities in media research during recent years. This has been an inspiring context for the discussions and analyses presented in this book.
The book elucidates a variety of understandings related to the concept of convergence, and at the same time reflects on the analytical advantage of the concept. The contributions discuss the impact of media digitalization and the degree to which the prospects of convergence have been realized. The studies range from investigations of institutional and regulatory change within media and cultural institutions, to analysis of communicative genres and social practices related to digital media.
Editors: InterMedia researchers Trond Eiliv Hauge & Andreas Lund, together with Jon Magne Vestøl at the Departement of Teacher Education and School DevelopmentUndervisning i endring - IKT, aktivitiet, design
The book addresses the role of technologies, the relationship between individual and collective learning, the role of the teacher, and how we can design for productive learning. The purpose of this book is to connect emergent educational practices with a sociocultural perspective on learning and teaching. Through a series of case studies this book seeks to first analyze various aspects of classroom practices and then moves on to discuss how such analysis can inform teachers' designs for learning. The focus is on classroom activities more than pedagogy or didactics in general.

Network of competence and research for ICT in education.
When it comes to putting ICT in education on the political agenda, ITU has played a crucial part. Their research efforts in this area and networking abilities are significant both nationally and internationally, and has made them an important partner for us at InterMedia.
In his speech at ITU's 10 year anniversary, InterMedia Director, Sten Ludvigsen, congratulated ITU for their contribution in establishing projects and research environments that are now positioning themselves internationally: - Without ITU's modern, topical agenda and financial profile, a lot of these projetcts and environments would never have taken form.
