On behalf of Rector Ole Petter Ottersen:
The Board of the University of Oslo rejects proposal for an academic boycott of Israel
One member of the University Board asked that the issue of academic boycott of Israel be brought forward for discussion at the Board meeting on June 22. According to current rules, each member is entitled to bring issues to the Board. The leadership of the University of Oslo stands united against any form of academic boycott and the proposal was voted down by an overwhelming majority (2 votes in favor of boycott, 9 votes against).
The leadership of the University of Oslo holds that academic boycott is not a way to go in any conflict of this kind. In fact, the leadership argues for a more active use of academic networks in conflicts where diplomatic contacts break down or prove inefficient. In the opinion of the leadership, an academic boycott of any state will compromise the principle of academic freedom, which is vital to all academic institutions. The University of Oslo does not formulate its own foreign policy but leaves it to its students and faculty members to freely express their thoughts and opinions regarding the conflict in the Middle East.
